How to start drawing
Thinking about how to start drawing but don’t know where to begin?
Or maybe you’re wondering “Could I even do this?” Well you can… I know you can. You can start right now…
Of all the things in the world this has got to be the most economical and most portable hobby to take up. The outlay is nominal — in fact I am sure if you look around you will find a pencil somewhere in the house, and who doesn’t have paper, right? Even if it is a scrap piece, it’s perfect to start…
And that’s all you have to do…… just make a start… today!
So here is what to do, in a few short steps:
- Find a few minutes, grab your pencil and paper, and choose a subject…
- Start simple — a basic object in the house perhaps — and take a few minutes to look at it… really look…
- Consider how the light is shining on it, where the shadow is falling; look at its form, lines and dimensions…
- Take your paper and divide it with a central horizontal line and a central vertical line.
- Find the centres of your object and begin drawing with a soft fine pencil and a soft, fine, relaxed stroke on the paper… just the outline to begin with.
- Focus on the object and just begin to replicate what you see… the light, the lines, the shadow… don’t rush, and let the shape begin to come alive at your hand……
What are you waiting for……? Give it a try — and post a message on your first attempt… share the object you chose, how you tackled it, how you found the challenge, and share your work with us…
